Are you curious what it’s like to have a world-renown granddaughter? Then join our GaGa Sisterhood Zoom meeting on Sunday, November 14 from 2 to 4 pm PST when we welcome Bertha Gaffney Gorman. Bertha will give us an inside peek at what it’s like to be Amanda Gorman’s grandmother. But Bertha isn’t just the grandmother of an inaugural poet. She’s an accomplished woman in her own right. She’s been a wonderful role model for her granddaughter.
As the oldest girl and third child of 12 children, Bertha spent much of her childhood tending to her younger siblings. As a result, she has always loved interacting with children — her own children, nieces, nephews, and especially her four grandchildren.
She attended college to study journalism after the birth of her two sons and her divorce.
For more than a decade, she worked as a reporter for the Sacramento Bee, the major newspaper in Sacramento, the capital of California. She spent another decade as a consultant with the California State Assembly and worked at various management levels at Lockheed Martin Corporation for 20 years. She served three years as an Associate Secretary at the California Health and Human Services Agency.
Community Service
Since retiring in 2005, she traveled to Kenya every year not just for adventure but also to do community-building work with women and children. Her last trip was in 2018. She continues to volunteer, serving on two boards of directors. She sees her grandchildren, nieces, and nephews as often as possible. Her greatest adventure was living in Sweden for 18 months with her young sons. She enjoys travel and continued to do so until the pandemic.
