Tea for Flu: A Few Favorite Home Remedies

When I’m sick, tea and sympathy go a long way in making me feel better. For the past few weeks my husband has been battling bronchitis. Then, a few days ago I came down with a cold and cough.

A friend wrote me the sweetest email: You can run away to my place for a haven if you want 🙂  I’ll make you a good hot tea and pamper you.

The following day she sent me the tea recipe that helped her overcome two colds. She was sure it would help both my husband and me.

When my neighbor learned that my husband had a cough, she came over with a mason jar of Jello powder and the recipe for her family cough remedy. She pushed her recipe with the zeal of a pharmaceutical sales rep.

Last year a speaker showed up at our March GaGa Sisterhood meeting with a bad case of laryngitis. Our host instantly went into action and prepared a pot of her favorite lemon ginger tea. The tea actually seemed to help and our speaker was able to finish her entire presentation.

I can’t personally recommend any of these recipes. The only thing I’ve found that works really well is time, lots of patience, and the healing energy sent by good friends. And of course, antibiotics when needed.

Some Grandma Home Remedies

Auntie E’s Anti-Flu Tea

  • 2 Tbs minced garlic
  • 2 Tbs minced ginger root
  • 1 whole organic orange, sliced and peeled
  • lemon juice
  • honey

Simmer garlic, ginger, and orange or tea in 2 cups water for 15 minutes, then steep for 10 minutes. Strain into a big mug, add honey and lemon juice to taste. Makes 2 cups of tea. It’s sprightly, good, and it works!

Valerie’s Family Cough Remedy
  • 2 tsp dry Jello
  • ½ cup hot water
  • 3 oz. port wine

Add Jello to hot water. Stir and add port wine. Keep in cool place and take at night. It coats the throat.

Marilyn’s Lemon Ginger Tea

  • 4 lemons, cut into quarters
  • 4 slices of fresh ginger
  • honey to taste

Place lemons and ginger in 4 quarts of water and bring to a boil. Boil five minutes then remove the lemons. Add honey until it “tastes yummy.” Drink while it’s hot.
